Healthy Living Speaker Series - February 2020

Should You Be Worried About Colon Cancer?

The American Cancer Society recently lowered the recommended age to start colorectal cancer screenings to 45 years old for those of normal risk. That’s because the disease has been on the rise among people younger than 50 years old. In fact, a recent research study showed that people born in 1990 have double the risk of colon cancer and quadruple the risk of rectal cancer than people born around 1950.

Lifestyle-related factors, including being overweight, drinking heavily and developing certain diseases, such as diabetes, can increase your risk for the disease. And it can be difficult to identify colorectal cancer early because the most common symptom of the disease is NO symptom.

So what does this mean for you, and what can you do to reduce your risk? Dr. Randelon Smith with Baptist Medical Group-Gastronintestinal Specialists will help decipher the research and answer your questions about colorectal cancer during the February Healthy Living Speaker Series.
